The authors’ reading is that relief from isolation depends on reciprocity: in a human exchange both sides disclose and both sides support, and receiving care alone does not close the gap.

The authors are explicit about the limits. The human-peer group met face to face briefly in the lab before texting began, which may have seeded a trust the chatbot condition never had. Most participants were not severely lonely to begin with, so the finding speaks to ordinary disconnection during a life transition rather than to clinical isolation, and the authors note results could differ for people going through a major disruption such as retirement or divorce.

The second paper is longitudinal rather than experimental. Folk and Dunn, in Psychological Science (2026), surveyed approximately 2,149 adults in the UK, US, Canada and Australia across four waves at roughly four-month intervals over twelve months; approximately 979 completed all four waves. Between about 26% and 30% reported using social chatbots in any given wave. Increases in social-chatbot use predicted later increases in emotional isolation (standardised coefficients of approximately 0.07 to 0.08), and feeling less socially connected predicted later increases in chatbot use. On the broader, more stable measure of social connection, chatbot use did not significantly predict a decline. Read plainly: loneliness appears to pull people toward chatbots, and heavier use appears to feed a specific, narrow feeling of emotional isolation — without visibly shrinking someone’s actual social world over a year.

Neither study concludes that a daily check-in is harmful, and neither is a clean causal test of the routines described below. What they agree on is a design point: the check-in behaves like a supplement, not a substitute, and the difference shows up in whether the routine ends inside the app or outside it.

  1. Pick one fixed slot, not an open channel. A single ten-minute window — morning intentions or an evening debrief — is easier to keep proportionate than an app you dip into all day.
